Down To Earth Celestial Navigation Russell Sher
A good book on Celestial Navigation. Not perfect, but better than most. I have many, many books on the subject and most of them either read like a graduate course in spherical geometry or sooner or later simply cop out on the explanations resorting to: "Just fill in the work sheets and you will get the right answer" which is not satisfying, even if effective. Sher (the author) does not cop out. I often found his particular writing style a little difficult to follow, but after turning it all over in my mind a few times and re-reading those parts I didn't initially grasp I ultimately found him to be correct in all of his explanations. I have returned to this particular book many times when I needed a better understanding of the practical side of a particular point of celestial navigation, such as using the tables in the Nautical Almanac for calculating Ho from Hs of a moon observation, and that is the acid test through which it has served me very well.I found his explanation of Mercator Sailing to be difficult to understand, but after a little research on the internet got it. Per my general experience with this book his explanations were correct, just not easily understood. Now his chapter on the subject is sufficient to serve as my reference. For content this book is five stars.
In a little different vein: This book is available as a Kindle edition which is a big help. It comes along on my reader without taking up any extra space or effort to keep it handy. But I have to offer a critique or two of the Kindle-ization of the book, and these are the reasons I gave it only 4 stars:
First the "GoTo" function doesn't work very well. However the book is short and the table of contents is interactive. When I need to find more on a subject I go to the table of contents and link to the first page of the chapter from there. Then I have to leaf through a few pages to find what I need. Not terrible, not perfect. Extensive use of the highllighter function helps. This goto fail is of particularl note when accessing the tables which are in the back of the book and which you need for some of the examples. Jumping back and forth between the example and the tables is tough. Eventaully I discoverd that I did better by writing down a value here or there from the example on a piece of scrap paper. Then I'd go to the tables and practice looking them all up more or less at once. Not ideal, but it got me there. Fortunately unlike a lot of Kindle books the tables here are actually enlargeable and readable on your Kindle. On the other hand the graphic representations of the work sheets he often uses in his examples are entielry scrambled and pretty well useless as a result of the digitization process. This didn't stop me form being able to follow his steps through reading the text though
If they would fix these digitization issues this book would be 5 stars all the way.
All in all a good serviceable book on the subject that won't steer you wrong, and it works pretty well on your Kindle.
